About

Born in Cambridge in 1981, photographer Rinchen Ato has been travelling to East Asia since she was two years old. Here, she shares a heartfelt selection of images captured across nearly two decades of visits to her father’s homeland.

Ato’s extraordinary work gives us a rare glimpse into a precious community and region, as she documents the struggles and celebrations of the Tibetan people living in Kham, Qinghai Province. Her photography explores a fast evolving culture, through a narrative of home and heritage. A society often depicted as foreign or ‘other’ is presented by one to whom it is familiar.

Focusing on the intricacies of family, friendship and themes of life and death, Ato’s images glow with an exceptional depth of understanding as they tread a delicate balance between peaceful detachment and gentle intimacy.

Rinchen has just published a limited edition book of her work. Visit Leyton of London to purchase a copy.
